Motor Start Capacitors & Motor Run Capacitors

A motor start capacitor is an electrical device installed to increase the torque of the motor and allows the motor to start. It provides a boost to the motor when it is initially starting up to help it get running quickly. It is required in motors that have higher inrush current requirements such as 3-phase motors. A motor run capacitor is an electrical device installed to improve the performance of a motor by increasing its efficiency and power factor. It helps adjust the voltage and phase shift in single phase motors, allowing the motor to run more smoothly. It is usually made from a dielectric material such as mica or plastic and is designed to store electrical energy for a short period of time. Motor run capacitors are usually used in larger motor applications and are not necessary for smaller motors.
