Optical switches are specialised components that allow optical signals to be connected and redirected. They are used in a variety of communication applications and networks, including communication over fibre optic cables and other types of optical fibre networks. Optical switches can be active or passive, depending on the type of applications they are used for. Active optical switches route the incoming optical signals while passive optical switches act as a type of optical multiplexer, allowing multiple signals to be combined and routed.
